40 in my 40s – How I’m Celebrating the Big 4-0!

I’m turning 40 in the month of August, and I have given a lot of thought as to how I plan to celebrate this age milestone. I have long said that to celebrate turning 40, I wanted 40 days and 40 nights of celebration, but the longer I thought about it, the longer I realized, 40 days and 40 nights isn’t enough. In fact, it’s too limiting of a celebration.

So instead, I thought it would be fun to spend the next 10 YEARS celebrating turning 40. I put together a list of everything I want to do in my 40s in celebration of the 5th decade of my life – or should I say the 5th level? I’ve been a gamer since turning 30, so I’ll actually go with that! I’m in the 5th level of the game of life!

So… here are all the quests I plan to complete before I turn 50:

Why Spend a Decade Celebrating Turning 40?

Well, here’s the thing not enough people talk about – we all think we have more time. But, if we keep waiting to act on the things we say we want, well – one day it might be too late. And, I personally don’t want to risk not doing alllllllllllll the things I possibly can in my lifetime. While this isn’t my complete bucket list, it’s certainly a lot of the tasks I had quests I had hoped to complete by or in my 40s.

As I complete each of these tasks, I plan to report back on what I did, when I completed it, and how it went. And, for some of them, it could end up being a series of posts. For example, I want to try 40 restaurants for the first time, and hey – that might just mean writing 40 book reports lol. We’ll see. My main goal though is to do allllllllllll the things, and then record them here in my digital scrapbook.

Without further ado, here’s my 40 items I plan to do in my 40s to celebrate the 5th level of the game of life:

Armed with my list, here’s a closer look at what I plan to do for each of these items:

1. Dine at a Michelin-star Restaurant

I’m going to treat myself to an unforgettable meal at a Michelin-star restaurant. I’ll savor every exquisite bite and fully enjoy the pinnacle of culinary artistry. I’m not sure which Michelin-star restaurant I will dine at just yet, and I’m definitely open to suggestions.

2. Hot Air Balloon Ride

I’m planning to soar above the landscape in a colorful hot air balloon. I’ll feel the gentle breeze and take in breathtaking panoramic views for a truly serene adventure. I’m terrified of this one because I’m scared of heights, but hey – YOLO!

3. Get to a healthy weight for my age and height

I’m committing to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. I’ll focus on nourishing my body with wholesome foods, and engaging in physical activities I enjoy. I love Zumba, so time to up how many classes I attend at my local gym!

4. Go to a comic-con style event

I’m going to dive into the vibrant world of pop culture at a comic convention. I’ll dress up as my favorite character, attend panels, and indulge my inner geek. I think this will be a lot of fun because every time I look at images of these types of events, everyone always looks like they are having so much fun!

I am currently obsessed with Firefly, Stargate SG1, and Star Trek – well, pretty much all the Star Treks…

5. Try 40 new restaurants for the first time

I’m not sure where to explore 40 new dining establishments, but because I have so many trips I want to take, I’m sure it will be easy to do this. I hope to expand my palate and introduce myself to diverse flavors and cuisines from around the world.

6. Try a 40 day yoga challenge

I’m committing to 40 days of yoga practice to transform both my body and mind. I’ll deepen my flexibility, strength, and mindfulness while establishing a consistent routine. I’m not sure when I will do this one, but I know I will be starting it with the Yoga Bible in hand!

7. Host a Mystery Dinner Party

I’m going to organize an exciting evening of intrigue for my family and/or friends with a mystery dinner party. I got a mystery dinner party in a box kit for Christmas one year and it’s high time I use it!

8. Create a bug out plan for an emergency

I’m developing a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan. I’ll assemble a bug out bag, map out evacuation routes, and establish communication protocols. You never know when I might need this, so I plan to do this one sooner rather than later!

9. See 10 more Broadway plays

I LOVE live plays so I’m planning to indulge in the magic of live theater by experiencing 10 Broadway productions. I’ve seen so many amazing shows off Broadway when shows went on tour, and I’ve been fortunate enough to see two ON Broadway. Time to enrich my cultural experiences and create lasting memories of world-class performances with 10 more trips to New York! Or just a couple of trips with multiple plays! haha

10. Go to an EKU Game

I’m going to support my new local team by attending an Eastern Kentucky University game. I’ll soak in the electric atmosphere and cheer alongside fellow fans.

11. Go to an UK Basketball Game

And, since I’m now living in the state I was born in, I’m also planning to witness the passion of Kentucky basketball by attending a University of Kentucky game. I look forward to feeling the energy of Rupp Arena as I cheer on the Wildcats.

12. Make my own wine

Admittedly, this one feels way out of my comfort zone, but I’m excited to dive into the art of winemaking by crafting my own vintage. Anyone have any good recipes or YouTube videos I should check out? I hope to gain insight into the intricate process of wine production and create a unique bottle to share with friends and family.

13. Write another book, or 40!

I’m channeling my creativity into writing another book, with the ambitious goal of penning 40 books in my 40s. I’m letting eBooks count for this big hairy audacious goal. My plan is to share my ideas, stories, and expertise with the world.

14. Cook a multicourse meal on a camping trip and start a fire without matches

I put these two together because it didn’t feel like they should be separate. I’m going to elevate my outdoor cooking skills by preparing a gourmet multicourse meal in the wilderness. I’ll challenge myself to start a fire without matches. I have some thoughts on the techniques I will try to get this one ticked off the ole checklist.

15. Start a new YouTube channel and put up at least 40 videos

I’m launching a new YouTube channel. I’ll commit to creating and uploading at least 40 videos to build a substantial content library. I’ve got two very different ideas for two channels. Not sure which one I will go with. Who knows? Maybe I will get wild and create both!

16. Visit a lavender farm

I LOVE lavender and have always wanted to immerse myself in the soothing sights and scents of a lavender farm. I look forward to wandering through fragrant purple fields and learning more about lavender cultivation.

17. Host a movie marathon party complete with themed foods

I’m organizing an epic movie marathon party with carefully curated films and complementary themed snacks and meals. I’ll create an immersive experience with decorations matching the movie genres. Debating on which franchise of films I will use for this. Or if I will just piecemeal it and stick to a single genre. For example, I could do a Harry Potter themed day, or I could just focus on spy movies. Time will tell for this one.

18. Do 40 crafts

I’m exploring my artistic side by completing 40 different craft projects. I’ll try everything from woodworking to beading to painting and more. Really excited about this one!

19. Try 40 new recipes

I’m expanding my culinary repertoire by learning and making 40 new recipes. I’ll challenge myself with different cuisines and techniques, including making a pie from scratch, homemade gourmet ice cream, and cheese at home. I’m anxious to play with this one because spoiler alert – it’s also one of the YouTube channels I was considering launching.

20. Read 40 books

I’m ready for a literary adventure of reading 40 books across various genres and styles. I’ll broaden my knowledge, spark my imagination, and improve my reading comprehension. I do have quite a healthy list of nonfiction books I want to read. Looking forward to all the knowledge I’ll unlock with this quest!

21. Paint 40 paintings

I love watching the painting tutorials on Youtube, and thought hey – why not try painting along with these? If nothing else, exploring different styles, mediums, and subjects could help me to develop my skills and find my unique artistic voice.

22. Alaskan Cruise

I’ve been wanting to go on an Alaskan cruise to witness the raw beauty of “The Last Frontier” for as long as I can remember. I’ll sail past towering glaciers, spot diverse wildlife, and explore charming coastal towns.

23. Go to Hawaii

My sister in law was just stationed in Hawaii – perfect time for a paradise vacation if you ask me. I’m looking forward to trying to learn how to surf, hiking volcanoes, and of course attending a traditional luau.

24. See the Northern Lights

I’m going to witness the ethereal beauty of the Aurora Borealis! I’m not sure where I’ll plan a trip to. But, it will be a northern destination during peak viewing seasons to see this awe-inspiring natural light show.

25. Buy a house and/or some land

I wanted this one accomplished BEFORE 40, but since it didn’t happen yet, I will make it happen in my 40s. I’m looking forward to investing in property and taking a giant step towards stability and potential financial growth.

26. Take 40 days of language lessons

I dabbled in this through my 30s, but it’s high time I actually learn some new sentences. I’m thinking Spanish is my best bet… I’m not sure though which language will end up being my final choice to immerse myself in a new language with 40 consecutive days of lessons.

27. Fly business or first class

This one might take some time, or a hell of a rewards credit card, but at some point in my 40s I’m treating myself to the luxury of business or first-class air travel. I’ll experience premium services, enhanced comfort, and gourmet dining at 30,000 feet.

28. Host a chocolate tasting

Chocolate is one of my favorite things of ever, so I want to organize some sort of chocolate tasting event. I’ll curate a selection of fine chocolates and/or chocolate dishes while Chocolat plays in the background.

29. Get a tarot card reading

I’ve played with free online tarot readings, but I think it would be fun to have a professional reading. I’ll approach the experience with an open mind and see what insights the cards reveal.

30. Do a food tour – appetizer at one place, dinner at another, dessert at another

I’m creating my own progressive dining experience by visiting different restaurants for each course of a meal. I’ll sample the best dishes from multiple establishments in one evening. Thinking I should choose a fun city for this one…

31. Start investing in retirement fund – I want a net worth of a million bucks by 50

Look, don’t come at me for a lofty goal. This is my list, not yours after all. But, somehow, some way, I plan to take control of my financial future by establishing and consistently contributing to a retirement fund. I’ll aim for a million-dollar net worth by 50 through disciplined saving and smart investing.

I will of course share the progress as time goes on. We’ll see where this path takes me!

32. Take Gourmet Cooking Classes

I want to elevate my culinary skills by enrolling in gourmet cooking classes. I can’t wait to learn advanced techniques, work with premium ingredients, and master the art of plating. Not sure if I will try and do this in person somewhere or online.

33. Make all my Christmas gifts one year

I’m embracing my creative side by crafting all my Christmas gifts for one holiday season. I’ll make everything from homemade vanilla extract to artisanal candles and handcrafted soaps.

34. Visit Bali

The beauty and spirituality of Bali has been on my bucket list ever since the first time I saw an image of the destination about 20 years ago. I can’t wait to explore ancient temples, lush rice terraces, and pristine beaches while experiencing the island’s unique culture.

35. Visit Australia

I’m ready for an adventure Down Under to explore Australia’s diverse landscapes and vibrant cities. I can’t wait to encounter unique wildlife, experience the culture, and enjoy the laid-back Aussie lifestyle.

36. Visit Japan

Okay yes, there are lots of travel heavy ideas on my list. I want to see as much of the world as I possibly can, and am looking forward to seeing firsthand the fascinating blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge technology in Japan. I want to explore bustling Tokyo, serene Kyoto temples, and picturesque Mount Fuji.

37. Mediterranean Cruise

Another cruise? Yes, please! Let’s go sailing through the azure waters of the Mediterranean to explore multiple countries and cultures. I’ll visit historic sites, indulge in diverse cuisines, and soak up the sun on beautiful beaches.

38. Visit Ireland and Scotland

One last travel destination I plan to embark on is a Celtic adventure through Ireland and Scotland. I want to explore ancient castles, vibrant cities, and stunning coastal cliffs while immersing myself in rich history and folklore.

39. Create an emergency meals kit

Sort of along with the bug out plan, I’m planning on preparing for unexpected situations by assembling an emergency meals kit. I’ll stock up on non-perishable, nutritious foods and essential supplies to be ready for unforeseen circumstances.

40. Get a Tattoo

Of all the things on this list, I think I’m the most afraid of this one. Which is really saying something considering how scared I am of heights and the hot air balloon idea. But, I have a meaningful phrase picked out that I would love to have tattooed on my wrist. If nothing else, this will serve as a permanent reminder of my 40s celebration. If I get the courage to go through with this, I will certainly share it here along with how it all went down.

Create Your Own List for Big Milestones

Whether you’re turning 21, 50, 60, or it’s just an ordinary Tuesday, there’s never a wrong time to start chasing your dreams. My 40 in my 40s list is just one example of how you can celebrate life’s milestones and make the most of your time on the physical plane we know of as Planet Earth.

I encourage you to sit down and create your own list of goals, adventures, and experiences you want to pursue. Don’t wait for a big birthday or life event – start now! Your list might have 5 items or 100; what matters is that it reflects your passions and aspirations.

Remember, we often think we have more time than we actually do. Creating a list and actively working towards your goals means you’re taking control of your life and ensuring you don’t miss out on the experiences that matter most to you.

Your list might include travel destinations, personal growth goals, new skills to learn, or ways to give back to your community. Whatever you choose, make it personal and meaningful to you. And don’t be afraid to dream big – sometimes the most audacious goals are the most rewarding to achieve.

As you work through your own list, be sure to celebrate each accomplishment, no matter how small. Document your journey, reflect on your experiences, and don’t hesitate to adjust your goals as you grow and change.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a pen, open a new document, or start a fresh note on your phone. It’s time to create your own list of dreams and adventures. After all, life is too short to postpone your aspirations. Start turning your dreams into reality today!
