When Every Rep Feels Wrong: Showing Up on Your Worst Gym Day

I walked into the gym on zero sleep, dealing with health issues, and honestly not wanting to be there at all. My form was off, I missed steps in the Zumba routine, and my own instructor called me out for struggling with my weights.

I get real about what it actually feels like to push through a genuinely bad workout instead of skipping it, and why that choice matters more than nailing every single move. I think back to my very first Zumba class in August 2023, when I walked out after fifteen minutes, and compare it to where I am now. Consistency isn’t about perfect workouts. It’s about refusing to let yourself off the hook, even on the hard days.

Day 365: I Didn’t Die (One Year of Moving My Body Every Single Day)

I said I’d move my body every single day for a year, and today I share if I actually pulled it off. I closed out the full year with a Zumba class, Tabata, and spin, capping off 365 days after two decades of doing basically nothing.

I get honest about the health scares that pushed me to start in the first place, the balance and strength I didn’t expect to gain along the way, and why year two isn’t slowing down for anyone. If you’ve wondered whether consistency actually works, or felt like it’s too late to start, this is your answer.

Who Is Rhonda Goode?

Rhonda Goode is a group fitness instructor in Richmond, KY with 14 years of experience leading classes people come back to again and again. She holds a general group fitness certification and a Silver Sneakers certification, and over the years she’s taught everything from Zumba to aqua fitness to boot camp style classes and more.

Rhonda walked into a gym for the first time in 2011 at 35 years old and just kept showing up. What started as a student turned into an instructor almost by accident, when two of her own instructors quit at the same time and someone needed to lead the class. She got licensed, started teaching a small community class at Eastern Kentucky University, and it grew from there. Word spread fast. She eventually packed out Berea College so completely that the mirrors fogged up from the crowd.

No Shots. No Pills. Just Results.

Rhonda’s style is simple (but NOT easy!). She shows up, she does every move alongside her students, and she doesn’t stand at the front barking orders while everyone else struggles. She’s known for being direct, sometimes blunt, always honest. If you’re new to group fitness, she’ll walk right up and introduce herself and tell you to do what you can. That’s what makes her approach to group fitness for beginners so different. Nobody gets left behind and nobody gets made to feel small.

She’s not about diet culture, quick fixes, or making you feel bad for where you’re starting from. There’s no shortcut she’s selling you. She’s about consistency, strength, and telling the truth even when it stings a little.

Why I Record This From My Car: The Story Behind the Mess

Most episodes of this show get recorded from the front seat of my car, and today I’m finally telling you why. My ADHD brain needs a calendar appointment to actually get something done, and removing every possible excuse is the only reason I’ve stayed this consistent.

This is episode 100 and day 365 of moving my body, and I refuse to turn this show into another polished highlight reel. I want you in the mess with me for year two.

Music and Movement: Why I Can’t Work Out in Silence

I didn’t realize how much I relied on music until I got stuck doing squats in a gas station parking lot with absolutely no playlist. There’s something about the right song that carries you through the hardest part of a workout, and silence just doesn’t do the same thing.

I talk about what happened when I tried to move without music, and why my instructor Rhonda’s playlist at the YMCA might be the best one I’ve ever heard. If your workouts feel harder than they should, this might be the missing piece.

Why I’m Doing This in My 40s, For the Woman I’ll Be at 70

I’ve never told anyone this before, but I was on blood pressure medication for a few months before I even turned forty, and it scared me more than I can explain. Sadly, even that wasn’t enough to get me moving. It should have been.

Every workout I do now isn’t really for today. It’s for the woman I’ll be at seventy, eighty, and beyond. I get into why strength and mobility now mean independence later, and why fitness in your 40s is really about protecting your freedom decades down the road.

If I Started Over: The Mistakes I’d Skip This Time

I wasted money on weight loss pills and shots, and the second I stopped taking them, the weight came right back on. I’m getting honest about the fitness mistakes I’d skip if I could start over, from diet culture guilt to obsessing over the scale.

I share what I’d tell my younger self, why rest matters just as much as movement, and how to make sure you’re moving for yourself and not for anyone else. If you’re just getting started, this one can save you time, money, and a lot of guilt.

The Goals That Scare Me for Year Two

A full year of committed regular movement down, and this was never meant to be a temporary challenge. I’m laying out my goals for year two: consistently reaching for the 20 and 10-pound dumbbells, finally fitting into smaller pants after dropping four sizes, and moving throughout my entire day instead of just during workouts.

I also talk about growing the accountability community and getting more people moving, plus new activities I’m adding: hiking, biking, dance classes, and maybe even kickboxing. If you’ve ever finished a fitness goal and wondered what comes next, this episode will help you keep going without burning out.

Saying Goodbye to My Before Clothes

Cleaning out my closet turned out to be way more complicated than I expected. Some clothes I was thrilled to get rid of. Others I felt weirdly attached to, even though I have zero interest in fitting into them again.

I get into the clothes I bought just because they fit my bigger body, even when I didn’t actually like them, and how that was really about feeling embarrassed about my size at the time. I also talk about the “fat tax,” the frustrating reality that bigger clothes often cost more, and why I’m holding off on a whole new wardrobe while I’m still changing size.

Stop Scrolling Fitspo: Why Comparing Your Progress to Others Is Sabotaging You

Scrolling fitspo and feeling behind? You have no idea what’s really happening behind those posts. I call it “compare-schlager,” comparing yourself to everyone except who you were yesterday, and it’s quietly wrecking more people’s progress than any bad workout ever could.

I get honest about my own struggle watching people who started after me lose more weight or get stronger faster, and why genetics, stress levels, and habits you can’t see make those comparisons pointless. If you’ve ever closed an app feeling like you’re not doing enough, this one’s for you.
